A forecast application for the Northern Lights

My Aurora is a free lifestyle application from Jake Ruston that allows you to check the probability of you being able to see the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. This weather app provides you with helpful maps and possible locations where you can see this phenomenon.

My Aurora is a unique application that focuses simply on the occurrence of the Northern Lights. It’s unlike any other weather app—such as Samsung Weather—that simply shows the likeliness of rain or shine. The forecasts on this app mostly revolve around the KP Index and solar wind patterns.

Check detailed forecasts

With My Aurora, users can easily view world maps with tables that allow them to see how likely they are to see the Aurora Borealis from their locations. In case your location isn’t part of the list, you can also access live webcams that allow you to watch the lights through a number of streams from varying locations. Users can also share photos of the lights and tag their locations.

As previously mentioned, the app also shows graphs that allow you to see KP index forecasts within an hour, over the next few hours, over the next few days, and over the next two weeks. You can also read up on solar wind speeds and density to provide you with a better view of how auroral activity can be affected.

All of the previously discussed features are laid out in a sleek and easy-to-view manner, as well. Although the app does allow you to receive alerts when auroral activity is particularly high, there are instances where the app does not immediately send out notifications. This can cause you to miss the appearance of the Northern Lights, especially when you’re not keeping an eye on the app’s forecasts.

Follow the lights

Whether you’re a local looking for an ideal spot to view the Northern Lights or someone who wants to have the opportunity to view this stunning phenomenon even without leaving your home, My Aurora provides you with a number of resources to help you catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis. However, there are some bugs that keep you from receiving up-to-date alerts on a spike in auroral activity.

PROS

  • Lists down locations with high chances of auroral activity
  • Shows streams of the lights from various locations
  • Lets you share photos with other users
  • Detailed forecasts for different periods of time

CONS

  • Does not send out notifications in time
